Severe storms and flooding have caused significant damage to the Monon South Trail in several areas. As a result, the crushed stone sections of the trail between New Pekin and Deam Lake Road will remain closed for the remainder of 2026. Paved portions of the trail in this section will remain open for public use.
We understand that this information is disappointing for our trail users, but we must ensure that the trail is safe for the public. The projected cost of repairs is $2 million with extensive work needed to reconstruct multiple areas that have been completely destroyed. Construction funding the Monon South Trail was made possible by $23 million in grant funds from the state’s NextLevel Trails program and the READI 1.0 program; currently no additional funding is available through these programs for maintenance, repairs or future construction. Radius Indiana also contributed an additional nearly $1 million in funds toward initial construction and maintenance. No local tax dollars have been used in the construction of Phase 1A and 1B of the Monon South Trail.
We will re-evaluate next steps in early 2027.
